The Cabbage soup diet is a radical weight loss diet designed around heavy consumption of a low-calorie cabbage soup over the time of seven days. The diet is actually surprisingly popular and has spawned a whole slew of similar fads. The origins of the diet are unknown, but it gained popularity in the 1980s. The diet is, however, almost universally condemned by doctors, as it lacks any substantial nutrition and the weight loss it causes is mostly water-loss, not fat-loss and therefore not permanent. Along with the cabbage soup recipe, the diet is usually touted as being used in hospitals to dramatically reduce weight in patients needing heart surgery, but this is not true. Most people trying this diet lose energy and experience light-headedness. The most common side effect is flatulence – a lot of it! [source: Listverse]

After having tried this diet, some people claim that the soup can tend to get a bit bland, especially since you are eating it several time a day … every day for a week. For this reason alone, a lot of them actually drop the diet. To liven things up a bit, different spices can be added. That way, the soup may come out more tasty – and help you stay on your diet.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is supposed to be a short-term weight loss diet only - to help people with a substantial loss of weight over a brief period due to a severe reduction of your calorie intake. As soon as you stop this one-week diet, you’re likely to regain the weight you lost unless you start following another more permanent diet.

Review from Ylva Biri, Helsinki:
"In the big picture, the cons of Cabbage Soup Diet outweigh the pros. First, the diet will not allow you to exercise during your diet week - if you want to work out, you'd be running dangerously low on fuel. Not too great for people that would also want to build muscle. Second, the diet isn't nutritious enough (which is exactly why it should only last a week). Even if you're looking for that jumpstart to eating healthier, there must be more balanced and supportive diets out there to chose as an option already from week one."

This is no diet to follow over a long period of time, though, since it focuses on so few foods that it can't possibly provide all the nutrients you need. In fact, it lacks ample quantities of fiber, protein and calcium.

Your menu options are severely limited on this diet. It gets very boring, very quickly. If you want to try it again, it's recommended that you wait 2 weeks first.

The Mayo Clinic considers the prospect of eating a lot of cabbage soup diet for a short period of time "appealing to people that want a quick fix" and "a type of fad diet that simply doesn't work as well as other proven long-term weight loss methods". Besides, "the numerous restrictions set forth by the diet could make you lose out on vital nutrients and disrupt your metabolism".
