Hot dogs are highly processed foods with numerous additives. An allergic reaction after eating hot dogs could be due to any number of these ingredients. Generally, however, it’s believed that nitrate and nitrite additives are to blame.

Avoid processed foods and cured meat products such as hot dogs, sausages and cold cuts! Check labels carefully; and avoid products that list nitrates and nitrites! Look for organic food! Eat a diet high in antioxidants! Vitamin C and certain other vitamins can reduce the conversion of nitrates and nitrites to nitrosamines.
