If you’re allergic or sensitive to sulfites, you could have reactions when consuming wine, vinegars, dried fruits and vegetables, processed meats, canned and frozen fruits and vegetables; and a variety of condiments.
Sulfites can cause asthma-like symptoms, sometimes allergic rhinitis (hay fever), urticaria (hives) and very rarely anaphylaxis. Wheezing is the most common reaction.

Sulphur dioxide (E220), sodium sulphite (E221), sodium bisulphite (E222), sodium metabisulphite (E223), potassium metabisulphite (E224), calcium sulphite (E226) and calcium bisulphite (E227) are preservatives that cause symptoms in susceptible people, particularly in some asthmatics.
It has been calculated that Western people consume 1–3mg of sulphite a day if they do not drink wine or beer and even more if they do. Sulphites are used in medical products, like some inhalers and Epi-pens.

Apart from foods and drugs, polluted air can be a source of sulfite too. Levels of sulfur dioxide can be very high in air in the vicinity of oil and coal burning plants and in polluted air on foggy days. Exposure to sulfur dioxide in the air can lead to bronchoconstriction even in normal individuals. In asthmatic individuals, even very brief exposure to sulfur dioxide can cause severe bronchoconstriction.

With a few exceptions, sulphites are not allowed on fresh vegetables and fruits + pre-packaged meat, poultry and fish.
The exceptions include sliced potatoes, raw grapes, tuna and crustaceans.

Sulphites cannot be reduced or removed by washing or cooking the food and occur naturally in many foods. Sulphites are required to be listed on ingredient labels of foods. However, be aware that bulk and deli foods, alcoholic beverages and food packaging materials may contain sulphites that will not be listed on any ingredient labels.
