McDonald’s was hearing quite a bit of feedback regarding its lack of vegetarian options, so the restaurant chain got serious about making a change. For the first time in the company’s storied history, McDonald’s now has a main dish that’s vegetarian. Right now, it’s only offered in the U.K., but that could change. This new option, which is offered in a Happy Meal and as an adult sandwich, features a breaded red pesto goujon wrap. If you're scratching your head thinking, "What's that?", you're probably not alone. The goujon is made from yellow split peas, tomato, Arborio rice, sun-dried tomato pesto, tomato paste, red pepper, olive oil, herbs and some sugar; and is served with ketchup and shredded lettuce. A similar sandwich is called the Spicy Veggie Wrap and it’s now listed on the main adult menu. The only difference seems to be the addition of spicy relish and red onion. The ingredients are dairy-free and vegan, but McDonald’s labels this a vegetarian product because the tortilla wrap goes through the same toaster as the chain’s burger buns, which contain milk.

Unfortunately, I feel the new vegan options at McDonald's are disappointing. They are what people think vegans eat and like. The vegetable goujons are mushy and bland, while other things are overspiced.

I just found out that although vegan, it's not as healthy as I thought.
It contains 209 calories compared to 173 calories in four Chicken Nuggets, 181 calories in a Grilled Chicken Wrap or 194 calories in three Fish Fingers.

After tasting panels tried over 100 different recipes, McDonald'seventually settled on a soy-based patty with plenty of vegan toppings. Anamma, food company from southern Sweden, developed the patty specifically for McDonald's, Business Insider reports.

You may wonder if McDonald's veggie options are gluten free.
The answer is yes and no. The bun isn't, while the other ingredients are cooked in a separate fryer, away from things containing gluten. However, cross-contamination may occur.
