In most Musim countries, people just take for granted that all food is halal without checking.
Under the Halal Directory, the public can check the details on the halal certificate.
The directory also provides the halal search facility based on bar code, product description or the name of the company that manufactured the product.

Muslim tourists normally check whether they have access to halal food wherever they travel. Spending by Muslim travelers is expected to rise to US$220 billion by 2020, with the number of Muslim tourists growing to 156 million from 121 million in 2016. That’s according to the Global Muslim Travel Index (GTMI) 2017, which was produced by Mastercard and CrescentRating, a ‘halal-friendly’ travel consultancy. ‘Halal’ tourism is clearly a growing market segment, with Muslim tourists seeking destinations which meet their needs, in terms of diet, dress or rituals. With a burgeoning middle class and increasing disposable income, many countries – whether Muslim or not – are looking to attract these travelers. Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Turkey are among the leading Muslim destinations. Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom are among the top non-Islamic or OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) destinations. Despite being a predominantly Buddhist country, albeit with a sizeable Muslim population in the south, Thailand has proved to be a popular destination for Muslims, mainly from Indonesia looking for affordable vacations and Thai food. As for the UK, Muslim spending is expected to rise to US$4.1 billion by 2020 even though there has been a spike in Islamophobic assaults following recent terror attacks in London and Manchester. When there is a mix of Halal and Haram food.
This is the most tricky situation but not uncommon in Europe, and that would be to claim that they serve Halal meat but yet also provide alcoholic drinks. In another scenario, they will claim to be able to provide Halal food but they also serve other food such as pork and its derivatives.
In such a situation, it depends on whether there are other available options nearby. If there are, you should put in a little bit more effort and find a Halal restaurant instead. It is better to eat at a clearly Halal restaurant despite having to walk a little bit more.
At its core, you must personally be satisfied and feel comfortable if you so decide to eat at any of these mixed food establishments.
Tip: Some of these mixed food establishments have dedicated and separate kitchens, utensils and storage facilities for Halal and non-Halal food – if they are able to assure you of this, then do use your own discretion in deciding whether to eat there.

Only in 200 did the tourist industry really start to focus particularly on Muslim travelers as a group with special needs, not only for Halal food, but also for prayer rooms, separate pools for each gender and other requirements, like hotels with no alcohol, disco, night club and casino. Singapore was the first country to define a separate market for Muslim tourists.

Most seafood in the West is cooked with alcohol. It is a good alternative to have seafood instead of meat if finding Halal food is difficult, but do make a request to the chef to skip the alcohol. It is usual for Muslims to convey to them that they are allergic to alcohol.
Some desserts, confectionaries or baked goods may also use alcohol or non-Halal ingredients and derivatives (e.g. lard or ham in pastries) so do make sure to double-check before purchasing any buns or sweet treats for consumption!
