I'm intolerant to alcohol. I don't drink at all. If I have to toast, I do so with smoothies, juices, sparkling iced tea, juices alcohol-free beers, wines, ciders and virgin cocktails. It tastes awful and really disgusting in my mouth. The only time I've drank it, it's on my 18th birthday and I haven't even enjoyed it at all so. Anyone else here has alcohol intolerance?

I can drink alcohol, but I don't do it often anymore. Mostly small toasts on rare occasions. I sometimes drank too much in the past and had terrible hangovers. So how do you know that you're intolerant to alcohol if you haven't really tried it, naiwen? Alcohol comes in many forms - some are bitter and others are sweet. While whiskey normally takes an aquired taste to adjust to over time, cherry liquour is smooth and sweet. If you add a dash of neutral alcohol like vodka to a cocktail, you will hardly notice it among all the other ingredients. Intolerance is normally a reaction to a substance (in this case one or more active ingredients in alcohol), not just feeling that something tastes badly. With alcohol, you will probably feel nauseous, experience an urge to vomit, have heartburn, cold sweat and maybe increased heartbeat. Sometimes, it also manifests itself through a stuffy nose and flushing skin. But for that to happen, you must actually drink a certain quantity, not just take a mouthful and spit it out. Do you think that you would be able to tell the difference in a blind test where you tasted a number of beverages without knowing their content in advance and one contained a small amount of alcohol? If so, it would indicate an intolerance, but further tests should be done to determine a definite diagnosis.

You must really have had a bad experience with alcohol, naiwen. But don't worry, it's actually a neurotoxin that is more harmful than beneficial, so it's not a great loss to avoid it.

Alcohol intolerance occurs when your body doesn't have the proper enzymes to break down (metabolize) the toxins in alcohol. This is caused by inherited (genetic) traits most often found in Asians or people with ancestors from Asia. Other ingredients commonly found in alcoholic beverages, especially in beer or wine, can also cause intolerance reactions.

One can also be intolerant to certain substances in alcohol, like for example wheat barley rye hops yeast grapes

People with alcohol intolerance have enzymes that don’t work fast enough or don’t work together, so acetaldehyde accumulates. Sadly, when there’s too much acetaldehyde in your bloodstream, it has side effects, which are the symptoms of alcohol intolerance (e.g., nausea, flushing, hives, etc.).
