People following medically required food-restricted diets are often isolated, excluded from social events and bullied at school. To avoid the anxiety of potential risk, they may avoid eating food away from the safety of their home or even skip events all together.
Most of the research has been conducted on people with food allergy, but we can extrapolate the findings and apply them to other groups that also follow medically required food restricted diets.
– 1/3 of children with food allergies are bullied because of them. – Children bullied because of food allergies report higher anxiety and lower quality of life. – Parents were unaware that their child was bullied 50% of the time. – Schools should make plans that reduce bullying and social isolation; and promote acceptance and understanding for children with food allergies. – Living with celiac disease leads to lower social identities and how others behave towards them.

A mother, whose child was bullied in school - both by teachers and other pupils - wrote the following in 2016: "When adults exclude a child with food allergies, they are modeling exclusion for everyone. They are sending a message to all the kids that it is okay to exclude the allergic child and a message to the allergic child that they are not worth including."

Many people that live with food allergies and dietary restrictions stop going out to a restaurant, because it can be more hassle than it's worth. The diner never seems to get a satisfying meal and the restaurant workers are flustered in making accommodations. For nearly 13 years, Johna McColl suffered through uncomfortable events like this before she became so frustrated that she decided to start a restaurant of her own that's a safe haven for those with dietary restrictions. Root 8, a vegan and gluten free restaurant in Beamsville, Ontario, offers plant-based meals with organic and local grown ingredients. Vegan mac n' cheese, veggie noodle bowls and cauliflower 'wings' are meals that McColl developed over the years, as she dropped gluten and animal products from her diet. "I work around people's allergies," says McColl, who is happy to customize a plate for a guest. She knows what it's like to feel left out or made to feel awkward about asking for a substitution at some mainstream restaurants. www.root8.ca/

Until recently, people with dietary restrictions were mostly stigmatised due to religion, but lately, also individuals that don't consume everything for medical and lifestyle reasons have felt excluded and bullied.

The feeling of being bullied and stigmatized does not end as children age into adults - bullying and a sense of loneliness are ubiquitous in many of the lives of those with food restrictions.
