Ovo-lacto-vegetarians often have religious or cultural reasons for choosing their diet. This includes Jains as well as some Hindus and Buddhists.

Ovo-lacto-vegetarians often have religious or cultural reasons for choosing their diet. Others may sublimate a desire to gain control over their lives through a commitment to an alternative nutrition system. Concern for environmental pollution in the food chain or water supply initiates the decision for some. Even though most of the diets are not harmful, pediatric clinicians should be aware that specific nutrient deficiencies could occur with some alternative diets. A lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet may be iron deficient.

An ovo-vegetarian diet may also fall short of protein. The nutrient is essential for healthy bones, organs, muscles, hair and skin. Since it is potent among meat and dairy products, you may fall short on the recommended daily intake if you do not incorporate plant-based alternatives into your diet. Adding more eggs into the diet fixes the insufficiency. You may also source your protein from legumes, nuts and seeds. Animal-based ingredients are rich in omega-3; and essential vitamins and nutrients such as calcium, iron, omega-3 fats, vitamins D and B12 and zinc. Since meat and dairy products are restricted from the ovo-vegetarian diet, you may fall short on consuming essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. To prevent this, find the plant-based ingredients that are rich in these components to serve as alternatives!

Lacto-ovo-vegetarian diets should be properly planned to meet your nutrient needs, especially for protein, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fats. Be sure to review the ingredient list and nutrition label to see if packaged vegetarian foods suit your health goals.

You might choose an ovo-vegetarian diet for health reasons. One common reason is that you want to be a vegetarian, but you are lactose-intolerant or are otherwise allergic to or sensitive to dairy products. You might find it difficult to get enough protein from a strict vegan diet, so you include humanely-produced eggs to supplement your protein needs. Egg whites are a very healthy source of protein while being low in calories and fat-free. While the yolk contains cholesterol and fat, it also supplies many essential fat-soluble vitamins and minerals.
Ethical reasons for choosing this diet are that you object to the conditions of dairy cows and therefore do not want to support the dairy industry. In this case, you probably only consume free-range chicken eggs or eggs from a known humane egg-raiser, due to concerns for how chickens are treated in the egg industry.
Scientifically, an egg has only half of the potential to become an animal. It has only half of a complement of chromosomes. It must be fertilized by a sperm cell for a complete cell to form and divide to become an animal. This is satisfactory for those whose ethics preclude eating the flesh of animals.

If you're an ovo-vegetarian and eggs are your main protein source, you'll want to watch your cholesterol intake. By replacing one whole egg with two egg whites, you will significantly reduce your cholesterol intake. Two egg whites contain about 7 grams of high-quality protein and almost no dietary cholesterol.

Not many people follow the Ovo-vegetarian diet and that's the reason that we do not come across such a term on a daily basis. Dairy products are not only essential for our body, they provide us a good amount of energy too. So basically, people follow the Ovo-vegetarian diet mostly because of health reasons that include the intolerance towards lactose present in dairy products. Other reasons involve various religious beliefs that inhibit people from consuming dairy products.
